Ordering Stock Photography

What are stock photographs?

These are photographs not taken for a specific client or purpose that are available for use via a license. Stock photographs are commonly used in three general areas: commercial (advertising, packaging, displays, etc.), editorial (news articles, textbooks, educational materials, etc.), and personal. Stock photographs are usually licensed for a specific time period and for a specific use. Exclusive use can be purchased which will prevent the same photograph from being used by two competing businesses or organizations.

How are stock photo prices determined?

Traditionally, license fees are based on the type of use, placement, industry, size, circulation, distribution area, and time period, among other factors. Calculating the license fee based upon the traditional pricing model can be quite complicated. Unlike most stock photo agencies, Seattle Photographs uses a simplified pricing model of only 4 price levels:

  • $25 - Personal Low-Res (1 Mpix) about 800 x 1200 pixels - personal blogs, web sites, presentations

  • $45 - Commercial Low-res (1 Mpix) about 800 x 1200 pixels - commercial web sites, Power Point Presentations, blogs

  • $95 - Commercial Hi-Res (4 Mpix) about 1600 x 2400 pixels - newsletters, brochures, product packaging, software, annual reports, post cards

  • $195 - Commercial Original (varies from 6 to 13 Mpix) 2000 x 3000 to 2900 x 4300 pixels - books, magazines, newspapers, billboards. posters, calendars, any other application where you need maximum resolution and detail.

That’s it. The placement, industry, circulation, territory, distribution do not matter.

What are Rights Managed photos?

Rights managed means the right to use a given image is granted to a certain user that will prevent the same image from being used by two groups at the same time for the same purpose. A use history can be maintained that chronicles the use of a given image for the benefit on any prospective future users.

What are Royalty Free photos?

Royalty free images are typically purchased for a one time fee, and can be use for most any legal purpose by anyone at any time. There is nothing to prevent two companies, even in direct competition, from using the same image, which can be disastrous for branding. Royalty free images are usually priced based on the size of the image. Royalty free images are normally sold in CD collections of about 100 images for $300 - $500. Low quality royalty free images can also be purchased as a part of clip art CD's at most computer stores, but these have very limited applications. In order to get a few usable images, you need to purchase the entire collection.

Printed on heavy duty PremierArt Water Resistant Canvas, then finished with a dry lamination process that is UV and water resistant.

They ship rolled, in very sturdy tubes.

What are mounted prints on canvas?

Printed on heavy duty PremierArt Water Resistant Canvas, then finished with a dry lamination process that is UV and water resistant.

The canvas is stretched and then wrapped over a wooden frame. The photo extends to cover the sides of the frame for a beautiful presentation.

Note:  Since the outer edge of your photo will be used for the sides of the frame, not all of the photo will be visible when viewed from the front.

The photo is printed on a larger piece of canvas to allow it to cover the sides:

YES! Framing options are not displayed on the shopping cart. Please call or e-mail us with the name and size of the photograph you would like framed.

What type of glass do you use?

We do not ship framed and matted prints with glass. Rather, we use a type of acrylic plastic, such as Acrylite OP-3, Lexan XL 10 of similar material. This is very durable and will not break during shipping. If you live in the greater Seattle area we can use glass instead of plastic if we can deliver the photograph to your location.

We use 1” deep aluminum frames with a black finish. All frames come fully assembled and include a wire mounted on the frame, so they are ready to hang right out of the box.
